1. Define the role you can evaluate

Separate field operations from technical and office roles. Train crew and dispatch work support daily movement; track teams inspect or maintain infrastructure; mechanical teams service equipment; signal teams work with specialized systems. Read each listing for the actual duties, location and schedule rather than relying on a broad category name.

For operating and field roles, evaluate the schedule as carefully as the title. Ask where you report, how far the assignment can travel, how shifts rotate and which safety training is required.

2. Confirm requirements and terms

Safety is central to railroad work. Employers explain training, fitness-for-duty expectations and operating rules for each role. A job may require outdoor work, night shifts, changing schedules, work near active equipment or travel between sites. Ask how the schedule is assigned and what training must be completed before duties begin.

Record the exact title, city, shift and listing URL. This makes it easier to compare openings without mixing requirements from different employers. If a detail is missing, mark it as unconfirmed and ask through the official channel.

3. Review the application process

Check that the application belongs to the company advertising the role. Confirm the domain, vacancy title or reference and location. Do not send financial information or sensitive documents before verifying who is requesting them and why.

  • Identify the official portal and exact location.
  • Read the essential duties and mandatory requirements.
  • Prepare a résumé with accurate dates and responsibilities.
  • Record when you applied and how the employer will contact you.
