1. Define the role you can evaluate
Start by choosing a role family rather than searching every school job at once. Substitute teaching, student support, administration, food service, facilities and pupil transportation can have distinct schedules and entry requirements. Compare the daily tasks, the age group or setting, the hours, and whether the position is temporary, on-call or ongoing.
For school roles, note whether the work is classroom-based, student-facing or operational. Ask how assignments are scheduled and whether the employer requires a background check before the first day.
2. Confirm requirements and terms
Eligibility is set by the district, state and role. A teaching position may require a state credential; an aide role may have a different education or assessment standard. Employers commonly describe screening, references, training and work-authorization steps in their own process. Never assume one district’s rules apply nationally.
Record the exact title, city, shift and listing URL. This makes it easier to compare openings without mixing requirements from different employers. If a detail is missing, mark it as unconfirmed and ask through the official channel.
3. Review the application process
Check that the application belongs to the company advertising the role. Confirm the domain, vacancy title or reference and location. Do not send financial information or sensitive documents before verifying who is requesting them and why.
- Identify the official portal and exact location.
- Read the essential duties and mandatory requirements.
- Prepare a résumé with accurate dates and responsibilities.
- Record when you applied and how the employer will contact you.
