Verify Citations in an AI Answer Before Sharing It

A citation in an AI answer can look convincing even when the source does not exist, the link points elsewhere, or the cited passage does not support the claim. Verification therefore has several layers: locate the source, confirm its identity, read the relevant material, and judge whether it supports the specific statement being made.
Treat citations as leads to investigate, not as automatic evidence. The level of review should match the consequence of an error. A casual reading list may need basic checking, while a public report, professional decision, or technical instruction requires closer examination by someone able to assess the subject.
Separate the claims that need support
Break the answer into factual claims, interpretations, and suggestions. Dates, statistics, product capabilities, quotations, and statements about what a study found usually need explicit support. A personal planning suggestion may not require the same kind of citation, but it should not be disguised as an established research finding.
Pay attention to compound sentences. One citation at the end of a paragraph may support only its first statement. Split the paragraph into smaller claims during review and identify what evidence would establish each one. This prevents a real source from lending an appearance of authority to unrelated assertions.
Prioritize claims that affect the reader's decision. A wrong publication year is worth correcting, but an unsupported claim about safety, cost, or effectiveness may change the practical conclusion. Review the most consequential statements first if time is limited, and disclose any remaining uncertainty.
Locate the source independently
Open the provided link and confirm that it leads to the stated source. If it fails, search for the exact title, author, publication, or identifier through an appropriate trusted route. A broken link does not prove the source is fictional, but it means the citation is not yet verified.
For research papers, compare title, authors, publication year, journal or conference, and persistent identifier where available. For product documentation, confirm that the page belongs to the actual provider. A similarly named third-party article may discuss the product without being an authoritative statement of its current behavior.
Do not replace a missing source with the first search result that sounds similar. The original claim may rely on a different population, product version, or method. If you cannot identify the source, mark the claim unsupported rather than silently substituting a convenient reference.
Confirm the source's identity and status
Check whether you are reading the original material, an abstract, a press release, a commentary, or a secondary summary. Those forms provide different levels of detail. A news article about a study can be useful context, but it may omit limitations needed to assess the study's result.
Look for corrections, retractions, updated versions, or notices relevant to the material. For technical instructions, check the product version and date. A source can be authentic and still be outdated for the question being answered.
NIST's generative AI profile identifies fabricated or erroneous citations as one way generated content can mislead readers. This is why source identity and claim support need direct checking rather than relying on the model's confidence.
Read the passage in context
Find the section that supposedly supports the claim and read the surrounding material. Search snippets and highlighted fragments may omit conditions, definitions, or exceptions. A statement about an association should not become a claim of causation, and a proposed method should not be described as a proven result.
Compare the population, setting, timeframe, and measurement with the AI answer. A finding about a small experimental group may not justify a broad statement about all users. A product feature available only on a particular plan should not be presented as universal.
If the source does not state the claim directly, decide whether the answer is making an inference. An inference can be reasonable, but it should be labeled and supported by a clear explanation. Do not attribute your interpretation to the source's authors as though they wrote it themselves.
Verify quotations and numbers separately
Check quoted words against the original, including omissions and punctuation that affect meaning. If you cannot locate the exact wording, remove quotation marks and write an accurate paraphrase only if the source supports it. Do not let an AI-generated quotation remain because it sounds like something the author might have said.
For numbers, verify the unit, denominator, period, and whether the figure is an estimate, forecast, or observed result. A percentage without its base population can be misleading even when the number itself is copied correctly. Trace a calculation back to the values used if the answer derives a new figure.
Avoid excessive quotation. Usually the useful response is a concise explanation of what the source establishes, with a direct link. Respect the source's rights and preserve context rather than reproducing large passages to make the answer appear more authoritative.
Keep a compact evidence record
Create a table or note with the claim, source, supporting location, review result, and required correction. Use statuses such as supported, partly supported, outdated, not located, or contradicted. This makes it easier to revise the answer without losing track of unresolved items.
Record the date checked for sources that can change. A product help page or pricing page may be updated later. If the claim is important to a decision, retain an appropriate reference or permitted snapshot through your organization's normal process.
Do not treat another AI answer as independent verification. It may repeat the same invented reference or rely on the same secondary summary. The evidence chain should end at material you have actually inspected and can explain.
Revise the answer to match the evidence
Remove unsupported claims, narrow overbroad wording, and distinguish facts from interpretations. If the evidence is mixed, say so. A shorter answer with clear limits is more useful than a comprehensive-looking answer built on uncertain citations.
Before sharing, check that every remaining link sits near the claim it supports and that the reader can follow it without guessing. Keep unresolved questions visible where they matter. The purpose of citation verification is not to decorate an answer with sources; it is to make its reasoning inspectable and its conclusions proportionate to the evidence.
When several articles repeat the same claim, trace them back to their original evidence. Repetition across websites does not necessarily provide independent support; they may all be quoting one announcement. Record that shared origin so the apparent number of sources does not exaggerate the strength of the evidence.
